What could be more rewarding than a family experience that combines fun, music, and teamwork? With constant questions of "what do you do for work" long going unanswered, last weekend, our family took the opportunity to provide audiovisual (AV) support for a rock band during an exciting and vibrant local performance. It was a fantastic evening filled with learning, laughter, and some unexpected surprises.
If you've ever been curious about the magic behind creating an enchanting live music experience, continue reading—you might just discover a rabbit in a hat!
Setting Up for Success
The afternoon kicked off with palpable excitement in the atmosphere. We reached the venue, a snug local place.

First on our to-do list was the epic quest of unloading the AV equipment from our trusty, oversized van—think of it as a clown car but with more speakers. We had a smorgasbord of gear: speakers that could probably double as jet engines, microphones that made you feel like a rock star, and the pièce de résistance, the SQ5 mixer, which we treated like the crown jewels. As we set up this technological circus, the kids were bouncing around like they’d just discovered a treasure chest of candy, eager to join the fun.
It was like watching a group of curious squirrels discovering a treasure trove of acorns. They popped those cases open with the gusto of kids unwrapping presents on their birthdays, and the sound of cables slithering out was the venue’s new soundtrack. This was their golden ticket to the land of meaningful participation, and we were over the moon seeing their curiosity catch fire like a marshmallow at a campfire!
Getting Hands-On with AV Equipment
Next, it was all about connecting the dots—or rather, the cables! The kids turned into cable ninjas, carefully laying sound cables like pros, all to avoid the dreaded trip-and-fall ballet. While they were busy mic'ing up the drum kit, they discovered the magical world of microphone placement and how it can make or break your sound—who knew acoustics could be so cool? One curious kiddo asked about controlling lights with the SQ5 mixer, which opened up a whole can of worms about how audio-visual tech is like peanut butter and jelly in live shows.
They were buzzing with excitement, picturing themselves as the ultimate showmasters, juggling sound and lights like rockstars. We chatted about how sound engineers and lighting designers are basically the dynamic duos of the music world. This hands-on adventure gave the kids a backstage pass to the wonders of live sound and lighting design, making it a music production memory they won't forget!

The kids loved the idea of being sound engineers for the day. They took turns pushing the faders up and down on the mixer, giggling as they experimented with different sound levels. The joy of hearing sounds shift and blend together was evident and enhanced when they discovered the wonders of how the FX feature worked! The sheer delight of hearing sounds mix and mingle was cranked up to eleven when they stumbled upon the FX button! For them, it was like discovering magic!

The Thrill of Sound Check
The kids were bouncing off the walls with excitement during sound check. Our sound engineer was like a wizard, guiding the little rockstars and telling them to listen for that screechy feedback like it was a treasure hunt. They were absolutely gobsmacked at how pushing a fader could transform a sound from "meh" to "wow!" in an instant.
As the band warmed up, the kids danced around the mixer like it was a spaceship, trying out the iPad remote control feature to adjust faders. Watching the faders move on the SQ5 mixer remotely was like witnessing magic in real-time. They suddenly found themselves juggling the chaos of running sound for a live show, all while standing there like a deer in headlights, trying to soak all the excitement in!

Enjoying the Performance
Once the band took the stage, we all settled into our spots. The energy in the venue skyrocketed, and the crowd was ready to be entertained! As the music filled the room, I couldn’t help but feel proud of what we had accomplished together. The kids stayed engaged, bobbing their heads along with the beats while occasionally checking the sound from the mixer.
A fascinating moment came when a few audience members complimented the sound mix. They appreciated how everything sounded balanced and clean. The kids beamed with pride, knowing they had played a role in this experience. Their love for the performance deepened, and they expressed their desire to learn even more about AV tech.

Packing Down: Hard Work but Worth It
As the last set concluded and the crowd began to disperse, it was time to pack down. While the enthusiasm dipped a little, the kids still rolled cables and returned equipment to its place. They were noticeably tired but remained committed.
At one point, the oldest asked, "Can we do this again?" That simple question was music to my ears. It meant they enjoyed the experience, even the hard work that comes with helping behind the scenes. We took breaks in between packing, giving everyone a moment to recharge.
While we were tired, it was satisfying to know that we had contributed to a wonderful evening of music and community spirit.
Memories to Last a Lifetime
This evening spent providing AV support was not just about the technology or the music; it was about family bonding and learning together. The kids gained a newfound appreciation for the mechanics of live sound, and I smiled at the thought of future opportunities like this.
The experience sparked conversations about the roles required to pull off a successful show. It awakened a curiosity about sound, mixing, and cool lighting, opening doors for exploration and potential new hobbies.
In the end, our family's involvement made the event memorable not just for us but also for the band and the audience. Engaging in our local community, supporting musicians, and sharing responsibilities was a day well spent.
So, if ever you get the chance to support a local band or community event, take it! You never know what skills you’ll learn, what memories you’ll create, and how you might inspire the next generation to appreciate the world of live performances.
